A Chinese golf community in Southern California, built around the President’s Cup and the principle of playing off handicap.
Who we are
Connecting Southern California’s Chinese community through golf
ACGC goes by two names — the American Cantonese Golf Club and the American Chinese Golf Club. Different names, same people: Chinese golfers living around Los Angeles and Southern California who treat a round as a reason to get together.
The centre of our year is the annual President’s Cup. On August 24, 2026, the fourth edition teed off at Red Hill Country Club with nearly one hundred players on the sheet.
How we play
Playing off handicap, so different levels share one tournament
The President’s Cup is played on a handicap-adjusted format: lower-handicap players concede strokes to higher-handicap players according to the group’s calculation. At the opening ceremony, club president Jack Lee explained the reasoning — it lets participants of different levels compete on fairer ground.
A handicap is not there to rank people. It is there to put everyone back on the same starting line.
The result: a player past sixty who has pushed his handicap below scratch meets a younger hitter driving past 280 yards in the same round — and someone playing their first club event can genuinely win their group.

Neither years played nor handicap decides who belongs. Newcomers and players of decades both have a real chance in the same event.

The season
The 2026 season
August
The President’s Cup opens
Nearly one hundred players completed the opening round through the heat at Red Hill Country Club; thirty advanced.
September
Weekly qualifying rounds
The qualifiers play one knockout round a week, narrowing the field down to the final pairings.
September 21
The final and 2026 annual championship
The closing match of the year. The champion’s name is engraved permanently on the President’s Cup legacy trophy.
October–November
The club travels
October 26–27 in Haikou, Hainan for the World Chinese Golf Championship; November 9 for the Langjiu Cup.
Off the course
The loudest part of the day comes after the last putt
Nearly every tournament is followed by dinner. Prizes, toasts, karaoke — the rivals who spent the afternoon conceding strokes to one another end up at the same table.
For plenty of members, that dinner and those songs are the reason they stay. It is usually where newcomers stop being newcomers.
